A Brief History of the Maryland Academy of Sciences (supplied by the Maryland Science Center, which is run by the Maryland Academy of Sciences) gives the founding year of the Academy as 1797.

A Brief History of the Maryland Academy of Sciences indicates that the Academy began as an amateur scientific society, and in the early years the organization was quite informal. It also indicated that it was only in 1826 that the Academy was incorporated under the name of Maryland Academy of Science and Literature. The same source indicates that next 40 years were troubled times with irregular meetings, and in 1897, the organization was re-incorporated under its present title, The Maryland Academy of Sciences.

The history of this society is, however, fraught with difficulties. Both the Harvard Univ. cat. record and the Univ. Calif. cat. record for the Transactions of the Maryland Academy of Sciences (1888-1921) indicate that this journal was

designated "new series" in continuation of Transactions of the Maryland Academy of Science and Literature, v.1, 1837. (This earlier academy was dissolved in 1844)
Yet the authority record in the Illinet cat for the Maryland Academy of Science and Literature indicates:
Not to be confused with Maryland Academy of Sciences, founded 1863. Its Constitution and by-laws of the Maryland Academy of Science and Literature, 1825. Founded 1822; incorporated 1826.
This latter authority record suggests that the Maryland Academy of Science and Literature was founded in 1822 [and evidently ceased to exist in 1844, according to the Harvard and Univ. Calif. cat records], yet had no relationship (or only a tenuous one) to the Maryland Academy of Sciences, which the authority record indicates was founded in 1863.

On interpretation of the above information is that:

  1. the Academy began informally in 1797,
  2. was formally founded in 1822 as the Maryland Academy of Science and Literature,
  3. was incorporated under the latter name in 1826,
  4. ceased, or became largely inactive, in 1844
  5. was re-organized in 1863 as the Maryland Academy of Sciences, and
  6. became formally incorporated under the latter name only in 1897.

Baltimore is the location of the Maryland Science Center (MSC), which was established after World War II by the Academy. The Academy is likely located in the same city, perhaps in the MSC iteself.
