According to Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.390, the Academy traces its origins back to the initiative of Conte Giuseppe Angelo Saluzzo di Menusiglio who began working with the celebrated matematician Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736 - 1813) and Giovanni Cigna on chemical experiments in 1757. Two years later, when several other scientists joined them, they published their Miscellanea Philosophico-Mathematica Societatis Privatae Taurinensis, after which they had meetings that they modestly called Accademia Privata. Because of the attention caused by this volume, Prince Vittorio Amedeo granted them the title of Società Reale in 1761.

Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.391 indicates that on 1783, July 25, King Vittorio Amedeo III placed the group under his special protection and gave it the name Accademia Reale delle Scienze.

According to Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.393, from 1792 to 1801 the Academy had to suspend its activities because of the troubles arising from the French Revolution. In 1801, the Academy broadened its scope beyond science by adding a new class devoted to the philosophical sciences, literature and the fine arts, replacing in this way the Società Paolina and the Società Filopatria di Torino which had been suppressed at the outbreak of the French Revolution. Its website links this change in scope to the Napoleonic occupation of Piedmont beginning in 1801.

Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.393 indicates that in 1803, the Academy began to publish its Memoirs once again. Finally reconciled with the new French government and having taken the name Accademia Imperiale di Scienze, Letteratura e Belle Arti, the group had the honour of admitting among its members the Consul Napoleone Bonaparte. According to its website, the date on which the Imperial designation was added to the name of the Academy was 1805.

Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.393 notes that in 1816, with the return of Vittorio Emanuele the Academy took once again the title of Reale Accademia di Scienze.
