According to its website, the Academy was founded in 1731 as Académie Royale de Chirurgie on the initiative of Georges Mareschal, first surgeon of Louis XV. The Academy was dissolved in 1793 as a result of the French Revolution. It was revived in 1843 by Auguste Bérard as Société de Chirurgie de Paris. In 1935, it became: Académie Nationale de Chirurgie.

It should be noted, however, that the Académie Nationale de Médecine website indicates that the Académie Nationale de Médecine was founded in 1820 (as the Académie Royale de Médecine) as the successor to both the Académie Royale de Chirurgie, and the Société Royale de Médecine (founded 1776; ceased, probably in 1793). One presumes that when the Société de Chirurgie de Paris was established in 1843, it would then have taken over responsibility for the field of surgery from the Académie Royale de Médecine.
