Founding of the Society

1726
According to its website, the Academy was founded with letters patent in 1726, August. The Saur World Guide (1998), p.64, however, gives a founding date of 1715.

The solution to this puzzle may lie in a 1716 letter by de La Roque proposing the founding of the Academy, since the existence of this public letter suggests that an Académie may have existed informally (i.e. without external financial assistance) for some time before it was formally founded in 1726. An interesting feature of this letter is an extended passage (pp.125-130) referring to an earlier Académie de Marseille, which appears to have existed in ancient times.

Its website gives the following sequence of names for the Academy: (a) in 1726 Académie des Belles-Lettres (b) in 1766 Académie des Belles-Lettres, Sciences et Arts (c) suppressed by the Revolution (d) in 1799 Lycée des Sciences et des Arts (e) in 1802 Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts

In Scudder #1207, we find a somewhat different account:

This academy, founded in 1726, became in 1766: Société des sciences et arts (#1212a); in 1799: Lycée des sciences et arts; and in 1802: Académie des sciences, lettres et arts (#1208).

Mémoires de l'Académie des Sciences, Lettres et Beaux-Arts de Marseille
A record in the Univ. Calif. cat. gives the title for this time period as Mémoires. Académie des sciences, lettres et arts de Marseille.
A record in the Bibliot. Nat. France cat. gives both forms of the name for the Academy for this publication; it also indicates that volumes for the title did not appear from 1945 to 1970, a 1969/1971 volume appeared in 1971, and after another gap, volumes began to appear regularly with a 1972/1982 volume in 1983.
