1718 This date is supported by Maylender 1926-1930, v.1, p.462, where the name at founding is giving as Accademia Palermitana del Buon Gusto nelle Scienze, nelle Belle Lettere e nelle Lingue.
Maylender 1926-1930, v.1, p.463 indicates that, in some sense, this Academy had as predecessors the Accademia degli Accesi (1568-1581) [see Maylender 1926-1930, v.1, pp.28-34] and the Accademia degli Riaccesi (1622-1682) [ Maylender 1926-1930, v.4, pp.430-438].
According to Maylender 1926-1930, v.1, p.463 this Accademy assumed the name R.a Accademia Palermitana di Scienze e Lettere in 1832. Maylender 1926-1930, v.1, p.467 indicates that in 1830 the Academy was placed under the protection of Leopoldo Conte di Siracusa, the brother of Ferdinando II. [NOTE: Ferdinando II was the Bourbon king from 1830-1859.]
It is interesting to note that the three volumes of the Academy's Atti published from 1845 to 1859 do not bear the royal designation. A likely explanation of this disparity is that by 1845 the Bourbon royalty were less popular than in the 1830s. Indeed, we read on p.469 of v.1 of Maylender 1926-1930 that the Academy was suffering financial difficulties and the consequences of instability in the political sphere, and it barely managed in 1843 to initiate the publication of a continuation of the Saggi (evidently the Atti).
After the ouster of the Boubon royalty, the united Kingdom of Italy began in 1860. But, according to the catalogue records in the Univ. Bologna cat., the Academy did not adopt the royal designation of the newly united kingdom of Italy until 1880. The reason for this twenty-year delay is not clear.
