1693 According to its website, the Academy was founded in 1693 as the Veneranda Tertulia Médica Hispalense (Venerable Spanish Medical Assembly) by a young Sevillian physician named Juan Muñoz y Peralta. [NOTE: De la 'Veneranda Tertulia' a la Academia de Medicina de Sevilla gives the date of founding as 1697.]
Its website also indicates that on 1700 May 25, Carlos II gave royal approval to the Society, and that in the same year it became the Regia Sociedad de Medicina y demás Ciencias de Sevilla (Royal Society of Medicine and Other Sciences of Seville). This name is supported by its publications from 1765 to 1817. But De la 'Veneranda Tertulia' a la Academia de Medicina de Sevilla gives Regia Sociedad de Medicina y Otras Ciencias as the new name.
According to its website, at some time in the 19th century, it became called the Real Academia de Medicina y Cirugía de Sevilla. The De la 'Veneranda Tertulia' a la Academia de Medicina de Sevilla gives, however, a more precise account, indicating that in 1830 the Crown desired that all existing societies in Spain become Royal Academies; and thus, around 1830, the Society took its present-day name. It appears that it is now known both as the Real Academia de Medicina y Cirugía de Sevilla, and the Real Academia de Medicina de Sevilla.
