Antecedent Societies

The Society website indicates that there were several societies that were indirect antecedents to this Society:

  1. Accademia Palatina (1698-1705) [According to Nicolini (1974), p.13, this Academy was founded on 1698, May 20. He indicates (pp.7-8) that it was variously designated Reale, Palatina, di Palazzo Reale and del duca di Medinaceli. Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.386 refers to it as the Accademia del Real Palazzo - Napoli and the Accademia del Medina Celi, indicating that it was founded in 1698 by Don Luigi Zerda, duca di Medina Celi; on p.398 he notes that there is no mention of its existence past 1705.]
  2. Accademia delle Scienze (1732-1737, 1741-1744) [According to Nicolini (1974), pp.17-20, this was a private academy founded in 1732 by Celestino Galiani; it was particularly active from 1732-1737; with the departure of Galiani for Rome in 1737, it languished and gradually ceased to meet; with his return in 1741 it came back to life for a few years, but by 1744, during the war of the Austrian succession, it appears to have ceased completely.]
  3. Reale Accademia Ercolanese (1755-1808)
  4. Reale Accademia di Scienze e Belle Lettere (1780-1788)
  5. Istituto Nazionale (1799) [The Naples Istituto Nazionale (not to be confused with the Istituto Nazionale Italiano founded in Bologna in 1802, and moved to Milano in 1810) was a short-lived product of the five-month "Repubblica Napoletana" in 1799. See Governing Regimes in Naples in the 19th and 20th Centuries for context.] [see Maylender (1926-1930), v.3, pp.394-396 Nicolini (1974), pp.39-43]

Società Reale di Napoli (1808-1816)

According to Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.379, only little more than a year had passed since the founding of the Accademia di Storia ed Antichità (as substitution for the Ercolanese), when King Giuseppe Napoleone Bonaparte abolished it, and on 1808, May 20, decreed the establishment of a new academy, the Società Reale di Napoli.

Nicolini (1974), p.45 offers a somewhat different perspective, indicating that on 1808, May 20, just before leaving the throne of Naples for that of Spain, King Giuseppe Napoleone Bonaparte revived the Istituto Nazionale of Naples, with a changed name, Società Reale, and a different partitioning into classes.

Nicolini (1974), pp.45-46 goes on to say that the Society was divided into three autonomous Academies. The first was the Accademia di Storia e Belle Lettere; the second was the Accademia delle Scienze; and the third was the Accademia di Belle Arte.

Società Reale Borbonica di Napoli (1817-1861)

According to Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.381, the Società Reale founded in 1808 by Napoleon was suspended in 1816 in order that it be reformed; by a resolution of 1817, April 2, Ferdinando IV di Borbone renewed it, giving it the designation Reale Borbonica, and also new statutes. The Society was divided into three academies: (1) Accademia Ercolanese di Archeologia, (2) Accademia delle Scienze, and (3) Accademia di Belle Arti.

Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.383 indicates that by a decree of 1860, September 11, the name of this Society was changed to Reale Società di Archeologia, di Scienze e di Belle Arti, and then, by another decree of 1861, April 30, the Society was dissolved, and in its place was created the Società Reale di Napoli di Archeologia, Scienze e Belle Arti.

Nicolini (1974), pp.57-58 gives a somewhat different account: on 1860, November 7, a decree of Garibaldi changed the name of the Society from Società Reale Borbonica to Società Reale di Archeologia, Scienze e Belle Arti. (Note that, excepting the lack of "di Napoli" this is essentially the name of the 1861, April 30 decree, according to Maylender (1926-1930), v.4, p.383). Nicolini (1974), p.58 indicates that on 1861, May 30, two decrees of 1861, April 30 were published, one dissolving the Società Reale Borbonica, and the other reconstituting the Society.

Società Reale di Napoli (1862-1948)

Nicolini (1974), pp.61-62 indicates that new statutes were given Royal approval on 1862, April 17, and that they remained in force until 1931.

Nicolini (1974), pp.63-64 notes that in 1931 there began for all Italian cultural institutions a period of unhappy events during the Fascist rule. In a decree of 1931, April 30, the government imposed certain anti-liberal modifications to the statutes of 1862.

According to Nicolini (1974), pp.64-65, three years later in a decree of 1934, October 16, the statutes were completely replaced. One of the principal modifications was the suppression of the Accademia Pontaniana (which had been founded in 1458, then suppressed in 1543, and then revived in 1808). Its library, archives and miniscule estate were ceded to the Società Reale di Napoli; moreover, the third Academy of the latter, the Accademia di Scienze Morali e Politiche, was renamed Accademia Pontaniana di Scienze Morali e Politiche.

Another principal modification found in the statutes of 1934, October 16 was that a completely unrelated academy, the Reale Accademia Medico-Chirugica (founded in Naples in 1740), was forced to become the fourth Academy within the bosom of the Società (Nicolini (1974), p.65).

Nicolini (1974), pp.71-73 indicates that, after the retreat of the German forces and the arrival of the Allied forces, a Commissione was appointed to reform the Società. Among the recommendations of that Commissione on 1944, February 6 was that the suppressed Accademia Pontaniana be brought back to life as an autonomous entity. This was approved on 1944, February 17.

Società Nazionale di Scienze, Lettere e Arti in Napoli (1948- )

Nicolini (1974), p.75 indicates that, although after the war Italy had changed from a monarchy to a republic [the actual year was 1946], the Società Reale took no immediate action to change its name, since after a century and a half the designation "Reale" in its name had largely lost its original significance, and the phrase "Società Reale" had essentially come to form a completely inseparable entity. But an order came from on high, and the Society was required to change its name. So on 1948, February 19, the Society changed its name to Società Nazionale di Scienze, Lettere e Arti in Napoli.

Atti della Reale Accademia Pontaniana di Scienze Morali e Politiche / Società Reale di Napoli

A record in the Bib. Naz. Napoli cat. indicates that this title is a continuation of two titles: (1) Q, and (2) Atti dell'Accademia Pontaniana (a publication of another society, Accademia Pontaniana ; this latter academy had a gap in its Atti from 1934 to 1946, while this run of the title in question occurred).

The same record in the Bib. Naz. Napoli cat. indicates that this title was continued by two titles: (1) AB, and (2) Atti della Accademia Pontaniana.
