1804
According to its website, this Society was founded on 1804, November 26 as the Literary Society of Bombay. The acquisition of the Library of the Medical and Literary Society of Bombay, which had been founded in 1789, formed the nucleus of the library of the Society.

Its website goes on to say that, in 1829, it became the Bombay Branch of Royal Asiatic Society (BBRAS) (of Great Britain). In 1873 , the Bombay Geographical Society (founded 1832) merged with the BBRAS, and, in 1896, the Anthropological Society, did the same. Its website indicates that in 1954, the BBRAS became the Asiatic Society of Bombay. According to its publications, around 2002 it became the Asiatic Society of Mumbai. According to Otness (1998), this Society is the largest of the RAS organizations.
