Founding of the Society

1718
According to p.13 of Desplat (1971), the Academy was founded in Pau on 1718, December 6 as the Académie de Musique.

Desplat (1971), p.14 indicates that the founders quickly began seeking letters patent from the King. Desplat (1971), p.15 indicates that, on 1720, August 22, the Academy received letters patent from the King, and became a Royal Academy, evidently of rather broader scope than music. Desplat (1971), p.9 gives the name of the Academy as Académie Royale des Sciences et Beaux Arts de Pau.

CTHS - Sociétés Savantes database gives a slightly different account (omitting mention of the name for the first two years), namely that this society was founded in 1718 with the name Académie Royale des Sciences et Beaux-Arts de Pau, and had that name until 1790.

Interestingly, we also find a different name, Académie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres établie à Pau, given in a 1746 publication entitled Pièces d'éloquence et de poésie qui ont remporté le prix au jugement de l'Académie royale des sciences et belles-lettres établie à Pau. (Bibliot. Nat. France cat.).

Desplat (1971), p.35 indicates that by 1779 the Academy had suffered an irremediable decline. By 1787 the Academy was in deep debt, and from that point to the formal suppression of French academies in 1793, August 8, the Academy became dormant. (Desplat (1971), p.36).

On 1841, January 30, the Société des Sciences, Lettres et Arts de Pau was founded and was the heir to the previous Academy; it ceased in 1843, then was resurrected on 1871, June 29 (an information page on the Société). The CTHS - Sociétés Savantes database, goes on to say that the latter name was retained until 1972, after which it became the Société des Sciences, Lettres et Arts de Pau et du Béarn.
