According to Maylender (1926-1930), v.3, p.367, after the disbanding of the Roman Accademia dei Lincei in 1630, the centre of scientific study passed from Rome to Napoli and Florence, where two illustrious scientific societies carried on the tradition of the Lincei: the Accademia degl' Investiganti (founded 1650 in Napoli) and the Accademia del Cimento (founded in 1657 in Florence).
A date of 1657 is also supported by the brief history page of the Accademia del Cimento.
Founded in 1657 in Florence by the Medici brothers, Prince Leopold and the Grand Duke Ferdinand II, The Accademia lasted only until 1667. But its publication Saggi di naturali esperienze fatte nell Accademia del Cimento was very influential. The Accademia marked the "beginning of modern physics," according to p.89 of Ornstein.

Ornstein, p.89, indicates that Targioni-Tozzetti included in this three-volume set all the original memoirs found in the Saggi as well as a list of many other topics investigated by the Accademia that he gleaned from the diaries of the members (primarily that of Segni).
